Stone lay out program taken place on May 23rd, 2016
Target completing date on November 15th, 2016

Jana Sewa Lower Secondary School is located in Gumela 5, Chouri Kharka Village Development Committee (VDC) of Solu-Khumbu district. The village of Gumela lies 3 kilometers to the west of Phakding. Janasewa Lower Secondary School offers courses from Kindergarten to grade 7 and at the moment there are approximately 140 students learning and 9 teachers teaching in this school. This school is built for a better access towards the children of several villages like Phakding, TokTok, Jamphute, NombuwaTeng, Rimijung, Gumela, Chermading, Ghat, Lhowa, Sengma, Benkar, Monjo, Chumo and Jorsale as this is the only school available in this whole region. Upon completion of their studies here, the students have to go either Chouri Kharka or Khumjung for their higher studies.

The April 25th earthquake left a devastating damage to the whole nation of Nepal. The school in Gumela was also severely affected by it as the school buildings and classes were all shattered by the tremor. The school is located atop a hill and because of the earthquake; some parts of the hill have become very fragile. Due to this high-risk landscape, the school management committee has decided to purchase the neighbor land near by school, which is much safer. The management committee has requested Mr. Nima Gyalzen Sherpa and Mr. Ang Kami Sherpa of Chermading and Gumela respectively to purchase the land and they have already purchased the land in March 2016.

After purchasing the land, the management committee has requested us to help reconstruct the school and we have initiated for the reconstruction of the school in the new land. We then requested the International Chairperson and founder of Everest Future Foundation, Mrs. Wang Jing of China, for reconstruction of the school and she has accepted the proposal and request that we made.

The total budget for the reconstruction of the school is about $280,000 and out of this amount, Everest Future Foundation is donating the major part of the fund and the remaining amount we have requested Wikinger Reisen GmbH, travel agency from Germany, and “Sherpa Nepalhilfe” a Nepal and Sherpa lover NGO from Germany and they both have accepted to be part by supporting the school project. The remaining amount will be borne by Himalayan Sherpa Foundation at the end to complete the reconstruction of the school.

The earthquake has destroyed majority of the school premises forcing students to study outside in temporary tents donated by a Chinese group (shown in the above picture). We have finalized the architect design of the school by Architect engineer Mr. Sanjiv  Shrestha. We have also organized an interaction program with the locals, entrepreneurs, intellectual and seniors of the Khumbu region on March 12th, 2016 at Tibet International Hotel,Boudhanath and the interaction meeting has passed the architect design as following below.

In this new architect design, there will be 3 buildings divided into 6 blocks (block A to F) and they consist of such facilities:

Block A: 8 rooms including-
1. Staff meeting room
2. Staff room
3. Head Master Office
4. Administration room
5. Lab room
6. Library
7. Computer room
8. Storage room.
Block B: 4 class rooms for Grade lower kindergarten to 3
Block C: 4 class rooms for Grade 4 to 7
Block D: Multi purposed shed to organize cultural program or any other meetings
Block E:School Canteen
Block F: Toilets for boys and girls

The architect design is in the process of obtaining approval from the Ministry of Education at the moment. Due to the poor infrastructure, there were massive destruction in most of the earthquake effective area. School is the place where most of the people do go to take shelter when they lost their home due to the earthquake but when the school is also collapsed, the people in both rural and urban area have huge problem for the place to take a shelter. This is why the government of Nepal has decided to approve the architect design of the school that can resist up to 9 magnitude of earthquake. We have decided to use the best out of best materials such as cement, iron rod, aluminum and other solid materials to build strong buildings that really can resist up to 9.0 magnitude of earthquake. The construction committee formed to build the school is focusing on a strong resilient building and a safe land to build the school under the supervision of Himalayan Sherpa Foundation.

Destructions caused to the school building by the earthquake can be seen in the picture below:
